Awana Ideas Awana
April 2008
 Welcome!

H ello Leaders!

Sorry for the short sabbatical of Awana Ideas. We trust the second half of your club year is going well! Time goes by so quickly, doesn’t it?

Speaking of the year being off to a quick start, have you noticed how the stores rush through all the holidays? The day after Easter they had already consolidated all the leftover chocolates to one small clearance shelf near the front of the store. The fourth of July decorations will be out by the end of April. Commercialism leaves no room for the slow-moving

Through the club year, you may feel the same way – rushed. Before the club night is over, you are already anticipating the next week – the volunteers you’ll need, the snacks you’ll buy and who’ll unlock the church because the custodian will be on vacation. Rest assured that we are here to encourage you through the year, and we are running the race with you, with perseverance! Please let us know how we can serve you!

For His Glory,
The Awana Ideas Team

High Power Soccer as Ministry

It’s finally warming up a bit at our Illinois headquarters, and we are excited that summer is on its way! That could be a scary thing for leaders as you are still focusing on finishing up school-year activities. We want to take some of the stress for summer planning off your shoulders.

As you plan for a summertime activity or curriculum for your children, consider High Power™ Soccer from Awana.

Awana Ideas recently sat down with Tami, our High Power Soccer program designer, for an interview.

AI: What is the goal of High Power Soccer?
Tami: The goal of High Power Soccer is to reach kids for Christ. High Power seeks to reach out to the community and draw in kids with the fun of soccer, while sharing the life-changing gospel with them and their parents.

AI: What is the difference between High Power Soccer and the typical VBS program?
Tami: Churches told Awana that their typical VBS programs were bringing in the church kids but not kids from the community. When these churches ran High Power, they saw dramatic results – kids from the community came and many of them returned for club in the fall. High Power focuses very intentionally on the gospel and helping kids understand their need for a Savior.

AI: Are parents involved in the program?
Tami: The High Power ministry incorporates a hospitality tent, and parents of the visiting kids are encouraged to stick around. They can enjoy snacks and beverages, watch their kids play and get to know with other adults from the church and neighborhood.

AI: Do High Power Soccer themes change every year like the typical VBS program?
Tami: The core structure of High Power Soccer remains the same, to ensure that people can use it year after year and not need to learn a new program all over again. However, the lessons, the skits, and the music change with each new High Power Soccer series released. This keeps kids coming back for fresh, new stories and excitement.

AI: What if I don’t know anything about soccer?
Tami: High Power was designed with all volunteers and skill levels in mind – it’s for the athlete AND the non-athlete. Volunteers need not have soccer experience – even if you’ve never touched a soccer ball in your life, you can be an amazing coach! The materials provide EVERYTHING you need to know about the soccer drills, soccer stations and playing soccer games.

AI: I’m from a small church. Do I need to have a certain number of kids for the soccer games to run smoothly?
Tami: High Power will work with as few as six to eight kids. You can adjust the size of your field and the size of your teams based on the number of kids in attendance. It’s very flexible.

AI: Does Awana sell all the soccer equipment necessary? How can I purchase those items and the curriculum? How much does it cost?
Tami: Awana offers everything you need to run High Power Soccer – from the T-shirts to the soccer balls, the leader lanyards to the air pump. To purchase the materials, visit the Awana Web site or call Awana Customer Care at 866-292-6227. Costs vary depending on how many campers you expect. There are a variety of packages to choose from. We suggest starting off with the Director’s Kit – it’ll show you how to plan and carry out the camp. It also provides you with a sampling of all the materials!

New T&T Trading Cards

T&T trading cards have been a great success thus far – churches have purchased more than 250,000 packs! We hope that your clubbers are having fun collecting cards and that this incentive for completing handbooks is helping your T&T ministry.

If you use the T&T Trading Cards, you probably noticed that Series Two began shipping in early January 2008.

While Series Two is similar in concept to the Series One, the art and content on the cards is all-new … including a “sneak peek” at the new art featured in the revised T&T Book Three coming in June 2008. Clubbers will be able to mix and match first and second series cards to get the sets they want. For example, if they have four Jalissa cards from the first series, they can combine with two Jalissa cards from the second series to get the six codes they need to access the special content on the Trading Cards Web page

Your clubbers are probably looking for that elusive Gold Streamwood Card. There is a brand-new one in a small percentage of the Series Two packs! The same rules apply as last year – if a clubber finds one, and completes the handbook, he or she will receive a special prize pack from Awana. If they found a Gold Streamwood Card last year and didn’t finish the handbook, they can finish the handbook this year and use last year’s Gold Streamwood Card to receive the Gold Prize Pack.

Grand Prix Memories

Life has come full circle. As a little girl I went to Awana clubs faithfully – you could say I was the poster child. My church offered the program through sixth grade and I went every week. I earned my Sparky, Excellence and Timothy awards (which are now probably holding up cobwebs in my dad’s basement). In seventh grade, I became a Leader-in-Training (LIT).

Club was life to me. I can even remember a few days when I was really sick. I still put on my uniform, grabbed my book and headed off to club. Other kids had sports or academic clubs, but I had Awana.

After I graduated from Bible college, I had a couple jobs until I landed one at none other than Awana headquarters! A few weeks into my job it was time to decorate my cubicle; put a little personality into my personal space. So, where do you think the poster child for Awana went to decorate her office? You guessed it – Dad’s basement. After pulling out a box with various awards from Awana, I unearthed not a shiny trophy, but a neon pink, heart-stickered Grand Prix car. “This must go in my office!”

I remember cutting the car with my dad and brother and sanding it until my fingers turned translucent. Then my mom and I went to get paint, and I couldn’t resist the girly pink. To top it off, I found girl’s pink stick-on nail stickers and used them as headlights. After the paint dried, mom asked, “What number do you want to put on the car honey?” I thought long and hard but came up with 19 because that was the basketball number of a certain boy I liked. I’m glad I can laugh about it now!

That car was a tangible way to bring all the fun memories of club to mind.

Just as an encouragement near the end of the year – you may not think your work means that much to your kids. But it does. I can’t remember what each night of club was like or what candy I received for winning games. I can’t really remember all the names of my leaders or how many times the green team won. But, what I do remember is far richer. I remember how much I felt loved at club. I can remember wanting to go and learn more about this Jesus my leaders seemed to be so in love with. So from a former kid in Awana to the current leaders out there, I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel … (Philippians 1:3-5).
