Awana Ideas Awana
November 2007
 Welcome!

Like it or not, the holidays are upon us. While we love all that we celebrate at this time of year (God's abundant blessings and the birth of our Savior), some parts of our holiday celebrations seem to sneak up on us, don't they?

For example, many here in the Chicago area take advantage of the relatively mild November weather to put up their Christmas lights, even though they don't turn the lights on until later. This makes perfectly logical sense, and is certainly preferable to frostbitten fingers later, but something about seeing people hanging lights while others are raking leaves can feel rushed!!

No doubt, the holidays are upon us ... and most Awana leaders are looking for fun, but simple, ideas for December club meetings. We ventured into the Awana Ideas archives to republish some great December theme ideas as well as ways to reach out to children and their families at Christmas. Plus, we've included ideas on bringing kids back after your holiday break.

Thank you for your ministry to children! Sadly, some of the kids in your club will have difficult holidays due to family struggles, financial challenges, etc. Your smiles and kind words can mean so much. (And, if you're the gift-giving type, don't forget that the Awana Store includes great gift items for every Awana kid!)

We wish you holiday celebrations that, like the ideas in this issue, are meaningful and yet ... simple.

Until January,
The Awana Ideas Team

December Dates to Remember

Yes, there are 30 other days in December! Check out all the notable dates:

December 1-7 is Cookie Cutter Week — Clubbers bring cookie cutters to make cookies for shut-ins or church socials.

December 3 is Make a Gift Day — When all else fails, make bookmarks.

On December 6, 1877, Thomas Edison played the first record, a recording of himself reciting “Mary Had a Little Lamb” — a fun fact to know and tell.

On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii — Teach clubbers about the freedoms we enjoy and those who sacrificed so we can have them.

December 14-20 is Tell Someone They’re Doing a Good Job Week — (bad grammar aside) This is a great time to thank leaders for their ministry.

On December 14, 1911, Roald Amundsen and his men became the first to reach the South Pole — Run an obstacle course race to the south side of the church property.

On December 15, 1791, the Bill of Rights became part of the U.S. Constitution — This is another great time to teach about the freedoms we enjoy.

On December 17, 1843, Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol Present the gospel with your own versions of Christmas past, Christmas present and Christmas yet to come.

On December 17, 1903, the Wright Brothers made the first airplane flight — Everyone makes paper airplanes. Award prizes for farthest flight, best design and precision landings.

On December 21, 1620, the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock — Talk about what they were willing to endure to practice their faith.

December 22 is the first day of winter — Crumple newspaper into balls, divide the room in half and the clubbers into two teams. Clubbers throw the “snowballs” into the other team’s area. Blow the whistle and see which team loses because they have more “snow.”

T&T Christmas Cards

 The Most of Christmas Present

Check out these easy-to-plan Christmas outreach ideas submitted by Awana leaders! If you’ve got your own plans, we’d love to hear them.

Each year we have a birthday party for Jesus. Our leaders bring 12 cakes, one decorated for each month of the year. Everyone sits at a table for the month of his or her birthday, and we sing "Happy Birthday" to Jesus. There’s always plenty of cake, so we invite the parents to join us.

Our church participates in our village’s annual Luminaria Celebration. Residents, businesses and organizations join together to light up the streets. Our clubbers help light up a specific section of the boulevard. After the celebration, we return to the church to sing carols and enjoy hot chocolate and cookies.

Our Awana clubs broke up into groups and went caroling around our town. We gave a gift of fruit, baked goods and a Jesus video to each home. We also included a written invitation to attend our Christmas concert. Many residents told us they were truly touched by our gesture. At the end of the night, we met back at the church for hot soup and bread.

I dressed as an old shepherd and told the history of Christ’s birth as if I had been a participant. I used candy cane lawn ornaments and explained how they remind me of Jesus Christ. An upside-down cane makes a “J” for Jesus. The red stripe is for the blood Jesus shed on the cross. The white stripe is the purity we have when we are saved. I also handed out candy canes for everyone to take home.

We have Joyful Noise Night. We deliver socks to a local nursing home and roam the halls singing carols and visiting with the residents. We end up back at the church for hot chocolate and cookies.

 Back After the Break

Most churches take two weeks off during the Christmas–New Year’s season. That’s 20 days between club meetings. You want your clubbers to return in January. Here are some clever ways to get them back.

Consider running the Great ShakeUP when club starts back up in January.

During the final Large Group Time before Christmas, tell the clubbers a story. Quit right in the middle of the suspenseful part and tell them you’ll finish it at the first meeting in January. During the break, send the clubbers a postcard to remind them to return for the rest of the story.

Announce a Summer Beach Party. Have kids come dressed in shorts, sandals and sunglasses. Play volleyball with a beach ball and run relays with a water balloon instead of a baton. Give a Large Group Time lesson on the foolish man who built his house upon the sand (Matthew 7:24-27). Serve hot dogs and lemonade.

Hand out a sheet containing a puzzle, Bible quiz or instructions for a craft on the final night before break. Tell the clubbers that anyone completing the instructions and bringing the results to the first meeting in January will receive a prize.

At the final meeting before break, give each member of a team a piece of a jigsaw puzzle. Tell them to bring the piece to the first club meeting in January. Award the team with the most-completed puzzle with ice cream or pizza. Assign two clubbers from each team to be co-captains. Encourage them to call their team members over the break to remind them to bring their puzzle piece on the first meeting in January.

Purchase two or three items your clubbers would like to have. Display them at the final meeting before the holidays. Announce that the items are prizes for the winners in several New Year’s Resolution categories — best Awana-related resolution, funniest resolution or most unusual resolution.
